SHOWTIME LEGACY THEATRE COMPANY LAUNCHES INAUGURAL SEASON WITH WORLD PREMIERE OF “BACKBONE”
Spartanburg, SC — Showtime Legacy Theatre
Company, a bold new voice in regional Black theater, proudly presents the world premiere of BACKBONE, a searing and poetic family drama by Johnny Sizemore and Kerrick Greer. The production will debut at The Chapman Cultural Center on Aug 29 - 30, 2026, with two power-packed performances.
Set in 1995 Memphis, Backbone takes place inside a fading Black-owned auto shop—where ghosts hum through the concrete and a family fights to protect the legacy of a matriarch erased from history. Through fierce confrontations, buried secrets, and one explosive discovery, Backbone asks: Who really built the legacy, and who gets to claim it when it’s time to collect?
Directed by Johnny Sizemore, Backbone kicks off Showtime Legacy Theatre’s mission to elevate urgent, authentic, and unforgettable Black storytelling in the American South.
